6 June 2007. A walk in Tottenham with Patrick Collinson (The Guardian newspaper) and Julie Davies (Tottenham Labour Party).

There was growing anger and dismay over the damage to communities from buy-to-let landlords – sometimes carrying out unauthorised conversions .

In a Guardian article Patrick had described them as "locust landlords".

Julie and shoals of other readers’ letters and emails mostly agreed. Patrick followed up with more articles. Whole areas were being laid to waste by a feeding frenzy he wrote.

He described, in Nottingham, . "Buy-to-let landlords who take homes out of the reach of ordinary families".

Another article: "First-time buyers vs landlords? With £2bn tax relief, no contest."

The BBC Today Programme also covered this news story – drawing on a Greater London Assembly report called Who buys new market homes in London.
(Funded by the London Development Agency). Though the researchers don’t seem to have included interviews with the victims – the tenants and their neighbours.in September 2006.
